The Roanoke Valley, with its four distinct seasons, provides an incredible value and quality of life to all its residents and visitors. It is centered in the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwestern Virginia, centrally located along I-81, a major north-south interstate, midway between New York City and Atlanta. The Appalachian Trail meanders through the valley, as does the Blue Ridge Parkway. Within 10 to 45 minutes, you could be at any number of our regional wineries, or you can be at Smith Mountain Lake, one of the country's most popular resort and retirement communities with over 500 miles of shoreline. In town, we have live Theater, Opera, Ballet and the Symphony; the new Taubman Art Museum, a Science Museum, Transportation Museum and more. Other attractions inclue the Historic Farmer's Market, Mill Mountain Zoo, festivals and events year-round, great restaurants, athletic clubs and much more.
Today, the Norfolk Southern/CSX Railroad is still a significant presence in our community, as is the Roanoke Regional Airport. The Valley is home to about one quarter million residents. We have many state-of-the-art medical and educational facilities in Roanoke and are closely linked to Virginia Tech and the New River Valley, increasingly known as "The Technology Corridor". Also, UVA & VA Tech have partnered to build the Carilion Biomedical Institute here in Roanoke City.
This area is also rich with Colonial History. In fact, Fincastle is and was the county seat of all Botetourt County, which back in the late 1700's extended from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Mississippi River and up to the Great Lakes region. In the mid-to-late 1800's, Roanoke was formed from the town called "Big Lick" and developed as the major railway hub for all of Southwestern Virginia. There are many historical museums and points of interest in the area to fascinate and educate both children and adults, alike.
