According to Expansion Management, a national business magazine, Roanoke ranks as the 25th hottest area for business relocation and expansion. Workforce quality, operating costs, local government support and overall business environment were deciding factors. The major sectors of growth have been in health care, education, public service and engineering technicians.
Botetourt County recently developed a multi-use, state-of-the-art community education and workforce-training center. Altec Industries, an Alabama based manufacturer of utility and telecommunication equipment recently located a new assembly plant at the Botetourt Center at Greenfield. Koyo Steering Systems of USA (A Japanese firm) has also located at Greenfield and is the first company in North America to offer electrical power steering systems.
Carilion Health Systems, one of the area's largest employers, is expanding and renovating several local facilities. They have also partnered with the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech to build the Biomedical Institute, an engineering and technology research organization to develop commercial applications for health related products.
Other major employers in the area include: Advance Auto Parts, a locally born company with over 1,700 stores nationwide, First Union National Bank, Norfolk Southern Corp., Kroger Mid-Atlantic, Allstate Insurance Co., General Electric Co., the VA Medical Center, Home Shopping Network, Yokohama Tire Corp., ITT Industries, Lewis-Gale Medical Center as well as local and national government branches.
Roanoke is also home-base to many prominent technology and software companies, including: Meridium Inc., Optical Cable Company, Precision Technology USA, Inc., SoftSolutions and the Smart Road project in nearby Blacksburg which displays revolutionary technologies for advancements in travel safety.
